The power of a number
Powers

The power of a number.

Powers are the result of successive multiplication of the same number.
A power is the abbreviated way of writing a number multiplied by itself.

A power consists of two parts:
- The base
is the number that is multiplied by itself.
- The index indicates the number of times that the base is multiplied.

Normally, a power is represented by writing the base in normal size and the index next to it in the top right corner, in a smaller size.

In order to name or read a power we say the base first and then we say the index. When the index is 2, we say "squared", when the index is three we say "cubed". For the other numbers we use "raised to the power of four, five, six..." etc.

- Notice how the result changes when you modify the base and the index.

- What is the value of a power when the base is 0 even though you change the index?

- What is the value of a power when the base is 1 even though you change the index?

- What is the value of a power when the index is 0?

- What is the value of a power when the index is 1?

When the index of a power is 1, it is not necessary to write the index. Writing the base is sufficient.
