The land area is often expressed in hectares.
 The hectare is a square hectometre,
that is, a square-shaped field that is 100 m long and 100 m wide.
 The are is a square decametre,
that is, a square-shaped field that is 10 m long and 10 m wide.
 The centiare is a square metre.
