BOUNDED SEQUENCES

INTRODUCTION

This unit introduces the concepts of the upper bound, lower bound, supremum, infimum, maximum and minimum in sequences of real numbers in order to classify the sequences as either:

  • Upper bounded
  • Lower bounded
  • Bounded
  • Not bounded

AIMS

  • To identify whether a number is an upper bound or not of a sequence.
  • To identify whether a number is a lower bound or not of a sequence.
  • To determine whether or not a sequence has upper or lower bounds.
  • To find upper and lower bounds of a sequence when they exist.
  • To identify and determine the supremum and infimum of a sequence when they exist.
  • To identify and determine the maximum and minimum of a sequence when they exist.
  • To classify different types of sequences depending on how they are bounded.
